As many Americans anxiously await President Donald J. Trump’s next move, whether it is scrubbing all references to climate change from the White House website or getting into Twitter wars with anyone who hurts his delicate fee fees, Trump’s supporters are taking to social media to express their own hurt feelings because we liberals won’t just “come together as a nation” and keep saying things that are “divisive.” Those of us who strongly condemn Trump’s record of making homophobic, racist, misogynist, and xenophobic remarks are being fussed at like an unruly group of third-graders, saying that we need to “settle down” and “give Trump a chance.” Progressives who worry that decades of progress for African-Americans, women, and the LGBT community is about to be wiped out by a Trump government dominated by super-wealthy white right-wingers are told to “get over it” because we lost the election.
Actually, what the Trumpers want is for liberals to quit worrying about the rights of any group except uneducated rural white guys. Whites won, dark people lost, end of story. It reminds us of the annual aftermath of the Alabama/Auburn football game, where inevitably some fans of the losing team try to chalk up the lost rivalry game to cheating referees, and the winning side says, stop whining, losers, you lost, end of story.
But a presidential election is NOT a fucking football game, and we will not shut up, not for one single day, while this grifty president and his cabinet full of conflicts of interest try to tear down everything that makes this a great nation.
Trump’s inauguration speech yesterday portrayed an American landscape rife with the “carnage” of a progressive presidency. Trump wasted not a single breath trying to heal the nation from the wounds of a divisive election. Instead, in a passage that many have noted is uncomfortably close to the speech made by villain Bane (Tom Hardy) in the movie The Dark Knight Rises, Trump says that his administration intends to take power away from Washington and give it “to the people”:
Which people? Only the best, whitest, most Protestant people, apparently, because Trump certainly has no intention of allowing the people who voted against him by a margin of nearly 3 million to have any say-so at all.
But this majority of Americans, including Blue Southerner, have no intention of going gently into that good night. We have no interest in “coming together” with racists. We will not “go along” with misogynists. We have no plan to support a president who wants to gut healthcare for millions of Americans. We do not intend to stay quiet while Muslims are demonized and the government gets back into the business of dictating which gender a person is allowed to love. And while we do not intend to oppose everything Trump does just for the sake of opposition like the Republicans opposed Obama for every minute of his presidency, we will oppose, loudly, his policies of hate, division, and corporate welfare.
If you truly believe that at this point in American history liberals should just shut up and go along, then you don’t know the first thing about democracy or the United States of America.
We will not shut up, actually.
Count on it.
