2017 has not been kind to your Blue Southerner. Back in March, after I lost most of my belongings in a house fire and my 3-year-old puppy to a deadly side effect from a seizure medication, I thought 2017 had done all its shitting on my household for the time being. I thought Blue Southerner would be back in business writing about politics from a liberal yet Southern viewpoint.
Welp. I was wrong.
This time, it was work rather than personal tragedy that knocked me out of my writing routine. Since my last post in March, I have tried a jury trial in federal court in Chicago (I lost), overseen the writing of a major appellate brief, and tried ten (yes ten) consumer arbitrations. I spent the better part of this week in New Orleans attempting to resolve a class action via mediation (that went a lot better than my Chicago trial).
All that is behind me and while I still have a challenging workload, I am finally at a point where I can commit to blogging regularly again.
And boy is there is blogging to be done. We are in the middle of the most extraordinary times in U.S. politics in my lifetime. We have a president who is a narcissistic, childish, ignorant pussy grabber. The new administration is paralyzed by one revelation after another concerning the Trump campaign’s alleged ties to and collusion with the Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Our president fired the FBI Director investigating that scandal, which makes Watergate look like a tiny little baby scandal. We have a Congress controlled by a GOP so riven by internal divisions that they cannot pass any of the legislation the Republicans have been promising since Obama took office. We have, in Alabama, now had a trifecta of forceable removals from high office.
And we have a nation that is suffering from the hateful rhetoric that propelled the orange-skinned embarrassment to the presidency. People are scared. People are afraid to speak out.
It’s time to speak out. Share our posts. Comment freely. Like us on Facebook and help me keep the right-wing trolls from taking over all the threads. If you’ve written something you think should be widely shared, email it to me (email@example.com) and I might publish it here.
Wherever and whenever you hear ignorance and trash posted as the truth, you have a duty to speak out. Otherwise, you are as much to blame for this nation’s spiral into white nationalism as the idiots who believe we need a wall on the Mexican border and to give tax cuts to billionaires.
