On Sunday, the New York Times published a savage piece on the internal workings of the Trump campaign. Times reporters interviewed dozens of insiders and their portrayal of the disorganized campaign, complete with an egomaniac candidate who requires constant reassurances that he really is great and awesome, is unkind to say the least.
One of the funniest bits, though, is that the relative quiet on Trump’s Twitter account in the last several days came about because Trump’s advisors finally convinced him to relinquish control of his Twitter account. Trump’s self-sabotaging attack tweets have dragged on his campaign for months, particularly his late-night attacks against a former Miss Universe who accused Trump of fat-shaming her. According to the Times:
In the final days of the presidential campaign, Mr. Trump’s candidacy is a jarring split screen: the choreographed show of calm and confidence orchestrated by his staff, and the neediness and vulnerability of a once-boastful candidate now uncertain of victory.
On the surface, there is the semblance of stability that is robbing Hillary Clinton of her most potent weapon: Mr. Trump’s self-sabotaging eruptions, which have repeatedly undermined his candidacy. Underneath that veneer, turbulence still reigns, making it difficult for him to overcome all of the obstacles blocking his path to the White House.
The contrasts pervade his campaign. Aides to Mr. Trump have finally wrested away the Twitter account that he used to colorfully — and often counterproductively — savage his rivals. But offline, Mr. Trump still privately muses about all the ways he will punish his enemies after Election Day, including a threat to fund a “super PAC” with vengeance as its core mission.
So little Trumpkins had his favorite tantrum-throwing device taken away from him by the grownups. God love him (somebody has to). You really should read the rest of the Times article too. It is well-done and very disturbing.
President Obama, who is developing quite the snarky sense of humor on the Clinton campaign trail, was derisive of Trump losing rights to his favorite play-pretty. Here he is:
For those of you who can’t watch videos at work, here’s what Obama said:
Apparently, [Trump’s] campaign has taken away his Twitter. In the last few days, they had so little confidence in his self-control, they said, we’re just going to take away your Twitter. Now, if somebody can’t handle a Twitter account, they can’t handle the nuclear codes. If somebody starts tweeting at three in the morning because SNL made fun of you, then you can’t handle the nuclear codes.
I’m gonna miss Obama.
