Angry whites turned out in droves across the South and Midwest to hand a shocking upset victory to serial liar Donald Trump, who appealed to the basest instincts of tribalism and nationalism. Trump’s surprising ability to turn out rural and small town voters across the region, including usually reliably blue states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, shone a bright light on the innate fear of “others” among uneducated white voters. Later this morning we will be talking about how the idiot pollsters missed the hidden Trump vote that has improbably swept him into office.
The election is over, and as an American citizen we have a civic duty to accept it. We accept the result of our democratic process. Donald Trump is our president now.
Many in the blogosphere and on social media this morning are speaking in terms of unity and healing the divisiveness that has marked this batshit crazy presidential race. Those are very nice words. Certainly as a nation we should try to find common ground and work together for the benefit of all Americans.
But if it means we just give in to the hateful rhetoric and unworkable and discriminatory proposals that Trump has made over the last year and a half, we at Blue Southerner say fuck that noise. We plan to oppose discrimination, xenophobia, and counterfactual policy proposals with the last ounce of our breath, and we will scream our opposition at the top of our lungs until Trump’s brownshirts round us up and chuck us in prison as political dissidents like they do in other oppressive authoritarian regimes.
We will be watching.
If the Trump administration starts to exceed its constitutional powers by “opening up the libel laws” or ordering the prosecution of political opponents like Trump expressly threatened to do with Hillary Clinton, we will oppose it and tell you why.
If the Trump administration tries to round up and deport millions of undocumented immigrants who are doing nothing except trying to make a living and live the American dream, we will oppose it and tell you why.
If Trump appoints judges and justices who do not respect the rights of women, minorities, and the LGBTQ community, we will oppose it and tell you why.
If Trump and his henchmen try to unconstitutionally block immigration based on national origin, religion, or ethnicity, we will oppose it and tell you why.
If Trump appoints idiots to the cabinet like Rudy Guiliani, Jeff Sessions, or Stephen Bannon, we will explain in blunt terms why none of these sycophantic hacks should be anywhere near the levers of power.
If the Trump administration tries to roll back measures designed to slow the progress of global warming, we will carefully explain to you in layman’s terms that science is not a liberal conspiracy and only the energy industry and alt-right wingnuts reject the unanimity of scientific consensus that if we do not control human production of greenhouse gases the polar icecaps will melt and half the inhabited land on earth will flood and be uninhabitable within our children’s lifetimes.
If the Trump State Department tries to tear up our multilateral deals with foreign trading partners, we will oppose it and explain (with facts) how globalism helps American’s quality of life. Isolationism hasn’t worked since 1939.
If the state department imperils our military alliances that keep our nation and the rest of the world safe from incursions by Russia, China, and North Korea, we will shout from the rooftops that Trump is about to start World War III.
If Trump continues to lie about facts and about his own statements and actions, we will be there to point those lies out.
We are not worried about The Wall. That is a fantasy and always has been.
The ball is now in Donald Trump’s court. He is now our president, and as Hillary Clinton just said in her concession speech, he deserves the chance to lead, if he will lead. He won the vote, but that doesn’t give him free rein to trample over the rights of our citizens or try to isolate our country from overseas political and economic influences.
We will be watching, and we will not be silent.
